The temples of Angkor are not ruins, they are the still breathing remains of a civilization that once commanded the largest urban footprint on Earth. This journey goes far beyond Angkor Wat, taking you to jungle strangled temples that most visitors never see, guided by archaeologists who have spent decades uncovering their secrets. You will stand alone at dawn before the towers of Angkor Wat, watch strangler fig roots consume the stones of Ta Prohm, and drift through a floating village on a lake whose waters rise and fall with the heartbeat of the monsoon.

Travel Tips

Travel Advisory

Exercise increased caution

Cambodia is welcoming but requires awareness in rural areas.

  • Use registered guides for remote temple visits
  • Avoid unmarked paths around Angkor, old mine areas exist off trail
  • Drink only bottled or filtered water
  • Keep valuables secured at hotels

Vaccinations

Several vaccinations recommended

Consult a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.

  • Required: None for most travelers
  • Recommended: Hepatitis A and B
  • Recommended: Typhoid and Japanese encephalitis for rural stays
  • Consider antimalarial prophylaxis for Tonlé Sap region

Medical Alerts

Heat, humidity and insects

Tropical conditions require preparation.

  • Use insect repellent with DEET, especially at dawn and dusk
  • Stay hydrated, midday heat is intense
  • Carry rehydration salts and basic first aid

Packing List

Ready packing

Tropical heat demands breathable, modest clothing for temple visits.

  • Lightweight linen or cotton, long sleeves and pants for temples
  • A scarf or sarong to cover shoulders when entering sacred sites
  • Sturdy sandals you can slip off quickly and repeatedly
  • Rain poncho for monsoon season, June to October
  • Insect repellent with DEET for jungle temple sites

Local Customs

Reading the room

Cambodian culture is warm but deeply respectful of tradition.

  • The wai greeting, slight bow with palms together, shows respect
  • Never touch a monk or hand something directly to one
  • Remove shoes and hat before entering any temple building
  • Point with an open hand, never with your foot
  • Ask before photographing monks or locals at prayer

Health & Safety

Tropical Jungle Health

Heat, humidity, and insects define the jungle temple experience.

  • Drink only bottled or filtered water; avoid tap water and ice of unknown origin
  • Use strong insect repellent; dengue is present in rural areas
  • Wear lightweight long sleeves and pants for temple walks in tall grass
  • Carry a basic first-aid kit; the nearest clinic to remote temples can be far

Getting Around

Moving through

Tuk-tuks and private drivers are the most flexible options.

  • Negotiate tuk-tuk fares before departing, or use PassApp for fixed rates
  • Hire a private driver for temple circuits, affordable and air-conditioned
  • Domestic flights connect Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and coastal towns
  • Moto-taxis are fast but only for the adventurous

Weather & When

Monsoon & Dry Seasons

Timing shapes the jungle.

  • Dry season (November to March): cooler, lower humidity, best for temple exploration
  • Hot season (April to May): temperatures exceed 38°C; start at dawn and rest midday
  • Wet season (June to October): afternoon downpours, lush greenery, fewer crowds
  • Sunrise tours require a 4:30 AM departure; dress for cool pre-dawn air

Money & Tipping

Cash still rules

US dollars are widely accepted alongside the Cambodian riel.

  • Carry small USD bills, torn or old notes are often refused
  • Riel is useful for amounts under one dollar
  • Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated, $1 to $2 for guides
  • ATMs dispense USD in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh

"Dawn at Angkor Wat changed me"

Our guide led us through the galleries before the crowds arrived, explaining every bas-relief. The light on the lotus towers at sunrise was beyond words. We then spent three days at a riverside monastery learning meditation from a monk. I left with a stillness I have never felt before.

"The most meaningful trip of my life"

From the floating villages on Tonle Sap to the jungle temples of Beng Mealea, every day felt like uncovering a secret. Our driver became a friend, taking us to places no tour bus reaches. The food, the people, the rhythm of life here, it all gets under your skin.

"Humid, intense, and unforgettable"

The heat in March was already intense. Drink water constantly and start temple visits at 5am. The sunrise tour was worth every early morning. Our homestay family cooked the best meals of the entire trip. Bring modest clothing, you will be entering sacred spaces constantly.
